We're a Virginia estate planning and trust firm of one attorney and a small team — by design. Our practice is sized for the way we actually want to do this work: with you, not at you, and for years to come.
I started this firm because I kept watching families pay the price for plans that were never really plans — just paperwork.
For most of my early career I worked the other side of that paperwork: probate cases that should have been simple, families fighting over things their parents never meant to leave ambiguous, trustees lost in a job no one explained to them. The same patterns kept showing up. The plan was bought, not designed. The lawyer disappeared after the signing. Nobody had updated anything in fifteen years.
So I built something different. A firm where the first conversation is about your family, not your documents. Where the fee is a number you see before you say yes. Where I call you every three years — because the plan I draft for the family you have today won't fit the family you'll have in 2031.
I live in Northern Virginia with my own family. I serve clients across the Commonwealth — most of them within an hour of the office, but a fair few by video from further out. I'm a member of the Virginia State Bar, a Personal Family Lawyer®, and a person who actually wants to take your call.
The first conversation is Two hours. We won't recommend a single document until we understand your family, your assets, and what you actually want.
You'll see fees in writing — flat, phased, or hourly — before you authorize any work. No surprise invoices. No clock running on phone calls.
If we use a legal term, we'll define it on the spot. Every document we draft is summarized in a one-page plain-English overview — for you and your family.
An unfunded trust is a binder on a shelf. We don't stop at signing — we re-title the assets, update beneficiaries, and confirm the plan actually works.
Every client is invited back every three years for a review at no additional cost. Laws change. Families grow. Your plan should keep up.
Sometimes the right answer isn't us. We have a vetted bench of CPAs, financial advisors, and litigators we trust — and we'll point you to them with no fee.
Personal Family Lawyer® is a small, invitation-based network of estate planning firms trained in a relationship-driven model — one where the deliverable isn't the binder, it's the ongoing fit between your plan and your life.
For you, that translates into a few concrete things:
A plain-English walkthrough of the documents every adult should have — and which one matters most when it's 2am at the ER.
The job nobody trains you for. A 60-minute clinic for new trustees — what's due, by when, and what you can delegate.
Guardian nominations, life insurance trusts, and the Kids Protection Plan® — the part of planning that keeps parents up at night.
Besides being a very knowledgeable, competent lawyer, John is a warm, caring human being! He held our hand through the entire process of creating a Trust, and genuinely had our best interest at heart.— Teresa H. · ★★★★★ on Google
